Our workshops and mentorship sessions are inclusive. Although we specialize in serving the creative needs of individuals with developmental disabilities, our process works with everyone, and all people are welcome and encouraged to take our programs.
The following practices outline our approach:
Our objective is to ensure a fun and life-enriching experience for each participant.
- Class Instructors who are Professionals
Our class instructors are professionals in their fields who have a deep interest in and compassion for people with developmental disabilities.
- Small Class Sizes
We have small class sizes to make sure that each student receives maximum individual attention.
- All of our programs and events are inclusive.
All of our programs and events are inclusive. Members of the general population are encouraged to take our programs, volunteer, and attend our events. We believe in the importance and positive impact of including and valuing people with developmental disabilities in our communities.
- Our instructors work closely with family members
Our instructors work closely with family members and agency staff to customize teaching approaches and best meet the needs of each student.
Our Creative Process:
- Our process is designed to guide both individuals with limited experience in painting, as well as those who are more advanced in their art journey. It is also designed to include and support people functioning at all levels
- This is NOT a typical art class, where everyone is working on the same image, learning the same techniques, step-by-step. It is more of an Art Experience!
- Students work on their own unique images, at their own pace, and independent from what the other students are painting
- The instructor promotes an intuitive approach, while providing guidance and suggestions to the individual student, as opposed to teaching to the class
- One of the philosophical ideas that we have adopted states that an artist’s unique style is based upon limitations. We believe that during the process of creating abstract art, a disability becomes an ability
- Students complete each painting entirely on their own. The caregiver's moral support is very important during the workshops. However, we urge the caregiver not to "help" the student during the actual creative process
- The goal is for our students to develop a style that is completely their own and a reflection of who they are and what they want to express to the world
